This Privacy Policy explains how Similist (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and protects information when you visit similist.com. By using the site, you agree to the practices described below.

Who we are

Similist is an independent editorial site that publishes curated lists of brand alternatives across fashion, home, software, and marketplaces. The site is operated by a solo publisher and contains no user accounts, login system, or comment section at this time.

What we collect

We keep data collection minimal. The information we receive falls into three categories:

1. Information you give us directly

We do not currently operate contact forms, newsletter signups, or user accounts. If you email us, we will receive your email address and whatever you choose to share in the message. We use that information only to respond to you.

2. Information collected automatically

When you visit Similist, our hosting provider and analytics tools automatically receive certain technical information, including:

  • Your IP address (truncated by Google Analytics for EU visitors)
  • Browser type, language, and operating system
  • Device type (mobile, tablet, desktop) and screen size
  • Referring URL and the pages you view on our site
  • Time and date of your visit, and approximate location based on IP

How we use this information

We use the information described above to:

  • Operate, secure, and improve the site
  • Understand which articles and brand pages are useful to readers
  • Diagnose technical problems and prevent abuse

  • Display advertising, as described in the “Advertising” section below
  • Comply with legal obligations where applicable

We do not sell your personal information for money. Similist does display advertising served by third parties, and depending on where you live and the consent choices you make, that advertising may involve sharing device and browsing signals with advertising partners. Some privacy laws classify this as a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information. The controls described under “Advertising” let you limit or refuse it.

Cookies and analytics

Similist uses cookies and similar technologies for three purposes: keeping the site working, measuring traffic, and serving advertising.

Essential cookies

These are set by our infrastructure (such as Cloudflare) to deliver pages quickly, protect against attacks, and remember basic preferences. The site cannot function properly without them.

Analytics cookies

We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-Y1DD1HKV0P) to understand how visitors find and use the site in aggregate. Our GA4 property is configured with IP anonymization, and we do not enable GA4’s advertising features, remarketing, or Google Signals. GA4 data is not used to build advertising profiles.

You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking entirely by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by blocking analytics through your browser’s privacy settings.

You can also disable cookies in your browser at any time. Doing so will not break the reading experience on Similist.

Advertising

Similist displays advertising served by Google AdSense.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites on the internet. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to Similist and elsewhere on the internet.

Third-party vendors and ad networks may also place cookies or use similar technologies on this site. We do not control those cookies and we do not receive the personal data they collect.

You have several ways to limit this:

  • Opt out of personalized advertising from Google at Google Ads Settings.
  • Opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices.
  • Block or clear cookies through your browser’s privacy settings. Ads may still appear, but they will be less relevant to you.

If you are visiting from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, you will be shown a consent message before any non-essential advertising cookies are set. You can accept, refuse, or manage your choices individually, and you can change those choices at any time through the consent controls on the site.

Affiliate links and outbound links

Similist participates in affiliate programs. Some links on our site — typically links to brand homepages or product categories — are tracked affiliate links. If you click one of these links and make a purchase on the destination site, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Affiliate tracking happens on the destination retailer’s side, not ours. We do not see your name, payment details, or order contents. We only receive aggregate reporting from the affiliate networks (for example, that a sale occurred and what commission it generated).

Our editorial recommendations are not influenced by whether a brand has an affiliate program, and advertising shown on the site has no bearing on which brands we include or how we rank them. We list and rank alternatives based on the editorial criteria described on our methodology page.

Third-party services we rely on

Similist is built on a small set of third-party tools, each with its own privacy practices:

  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure — hosting and server logs
  • Cloudflare — CDN, DDoS protection, and basic security
  • Google Analytics 4 — anonymized traffic measurement
  • Google Search Console — search performance reporting
  • Google AdSense — advertising delivery and measurement
  • Google Funding Choices — consent management for visitors in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland
  • Affiliate networks (such as Amazon Associates, Awin, CJ, Impact, and similar) — only when you click an outbound affiliate link
  • logo.dev and Google S2 — for fetching brand logos shown on the site

Each of these providers has its own privacy policy. We recommend reviewing them if you would like to understand how they handle data.

How long we keep data

Server access logs are retained for up to 30 days for security and debugging purposes. Google Analytics data is retained for 14 months and then automatically deleted, in line with GA4’s default retention setting. Advertising cookies set by Google and its partners are governed by their own retention periods, which we do not control. Emails you send us are kept only as long as needed to respond and follow up.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict the processing of your information, and to opt out of personalized advertising. To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected] and we will respond within a reasonable timeframe.

Because Similist does not maintain user accounts, the personal data we actually hold about any individual visitor is very limited — typically nothing more than aggregated analytics and any emails you have voluntarily sent us. Data held by our advertising partners is subject to their own policies, and the opt-out links under “Advertising” are the fastest route to limiting it.

Children’s privacy

Similist is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. We do not serve personalized advertising to visitors we know to be under the applicable age of consent. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

International visitors

Similist is operated outside the European Union and the United States. By using the site, you understand that your information may be processed in countries with data protection laws different from your own. We rely on the providers listed above (Google, Cloudflare, Oracle) to handle data transfers in line with their stated safeguards.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of the page. Material changes will be reflected on this page, and continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
